ALCOHOL /DRUGS/ SMOKING

What is the position of the Anglican Church in the Bahamas on the use of alcohol?

The Church has wine during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, and teaches consumption in moderation if desired at all, and abstinence if addictions run in the family. Scripture speaks of excess drinking as a sin, as wine was a part of that culture e.g. Jesus changing water to wine. (See 1Tim 1:23 also)

What is the position of the Anglican Church in the Bahamas on drug use?

The Church considers medically prescribed and monitored drug usage as necessary in the case of certain physical and mental illnesses, but does not endorse social drug use. (see the section related to alcohol)

SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR

The Church holds that as all human life is sacred, that it should only occur if the mother's life is seriously threatened.

What is the position of the Anglican Church in the Bahamas on the use of contraception?

The Church endorses family planning for those who are married and teaches abstinence for those who are single because fornication (sex outside of marriage) is a sin. However, those who ignore this teaching and are sexually active persons need to protect themselves from disease and unwanted pregnancy. (Ephesians 5:5, Galatians 5:19)

What is the position of the Anglican Church in the Bahamas on homosexuality?

The Church acknowledges that there are persons with such inclinations who need pastoral support but we teach that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that abstinence is for those who are single because fornication (sex outside of marriage) is a sin. (1 Timothy 1:8)

DANCING/MOVIES/MUSIC

What is the position of the Anglican Church in the Bahamas on dancing?

Several churches have liturgical dance as a part of their worship and it has proven to be very meaningful and powerful when done reverently and in tasteful attire. Members who engage in social dancing are encouraged to be mindful of their Christian witness when it comes to lyrics and movements.

What is the position of the Anglican Church in the Bahamas on movies and television?

The Church does not consider that there is anything inherently wrong in watching movies and television, but content, obscene language, violence and blatant sexual expressions are to be monitored closely and avoided wherever possible. Supervision of children and youth is very important in this respect.

The Church's position is that any created object or person can be properly used, refused or abused. God is glorified when we work for the good of all creation.
